The Plateau That Turns Pink Without Warning Every late April, the broad ridge of Hwangmaesan — a 1,113-metre highland in South Gyeongsang Province — gets swallowed by royal azaleas. Koreans call the flower cheoljjuk , and up here they do not grow in polite clusters along a path. They carpet the entire plateau, slope to slope, for roughly two kilometres of open ridge walking. It is one of the most genuinely spectacular wildflower spectacles in the country, and it is almost completely unknown among foreign visitors. That invisibility is partly a language barrier, partly geography. Hwangmaesan sits above the town of Hapcheon in inland Gyeongnam — not on the way to anywhere most international travellers go. No tourist shuttle runs to the trailhead. No direct bus connects from Busan or Daegu in any useful way.
