Gajisan via Unmunryeong Pass: The Quiet West Ridge

The Miryang Side Gets All the Attention. That's Exactly the Problem. Most foreign hikers who come to Gajisan arrive from the east — Miryang or Ulsan side, funnelled up through Seonamsa or the Eoreumgol valley, joining the weekend queue toward the 1,240-metre summit. It works, but you spend the first and last hour of your day surrounded by people who all had the same idea. The west approach via Unmunryeong Pass, starting from Cheongdo County, is a different experience entirely: a longer ridge walk, a slower burn, and a summit arrival that often feels like you got there first — even when you didn't. I've driven clients to the Unmunryeong trailhead three times now, most recently with a couple from the Netherlands who had already done Cheonwangbong on Jirisan and wanted something in the Yeongnam Alps that didn't feel like a cable-car queue.
