The Mountain at the Bottom of the Map Most foreign hikers in Korea work through a familiar checklist — Bukhansan, Seoraksan, maybe Hallasan if they make it to Jeju. Duryunsan rarely appears on that list, and that is exactly why I keep driving clients down to Haenam. It sits at the very southern tip of the Korean mainland, a place where the peninsula quietly runs out of land before the sea takes over. Standing on the summit ridge on a clear morning, you can see the islands of the South Sea scattered all the way to the horizon, and on the very best days, Jeju's Hallasan floats above the haze like a smudge of charcoal. It is not a dramatic, knife-edged mountain. At 703 metres, Duryunsan is modest by Korean standards.
