Chuwolsan Damyang: The Granite Ridge Beyond the Bamboo

Most People Stop at the Bamboo. A Few Keep Driving. Every foreign visitor who comes to Damyang has the same itinerary: walk the Juknokwon bamboo grove, eat some rice noodles ( dakgalbi or ttukbaegi gukbap ), and head back to Gwangju or Jeonju by evening. I have driven clients through Damyang dozens of times. The bamboo is genuinely beautiful, especially in early morning fog. But Damyang-gun extends north into a jagged spine of exposed granite that almost no foreign visitor ever sees, and that ridge is called Chuwolsan. Chuwolsan sits at 730 m, modest by Korean standards, but the summit ridge punches well above its weight. You get open rock slabs, narrow knife-edge sections, and a 360-degree view that sweeps from Mudeungsan's broad shoulder to the south all the way to the Honam Plain stretching toward the Yellow Sea.
