Hallasan Yeongsil Trail: Jeju's Quieter Western Ascent

Everyone Goes East. We Go West. Most foreign visitors to Hallasan hear one name and one name only: Seongpanak. It is the longest route, it reaches the crater rim at Baeknoktam, and every travel blog points straight to it. So on any clear weekend morning you will find a slow-moving column of hikers on that eastern flank, rucksacks bumping, trekking poles clicking on concrete path, all the way from Seongpanak parking lot to the top. The Yeongsil course, starting from the south-western slope, is almost the opposite experience. The trailhead sits at roughly 1,100 metres above sea level — Hallasan itself peaks at 1,950 metres — so you begin already high, already cold, already above the tangerine orchards. The crowds that pack Seongpanak simply do not make it here, partly because the bus connections are awkward, and partly because Yeongsil does not go all the way to the summit crater.
