Jirisan Chilseon Valley: Korea's Permit-Only Hidden Canyon

The Ranger Checked Our Papers at a Rope Barrier in the Middle of the Forest There is a moment on the approach to Chilseon Valley where the trail narrows between two mossy boulders and a wooden barrier stretches across the path. A national park ranger sits in a small booth beside it. He checks your permit, counts your group, and only then lifts the rope. Behind you, a couple without reservations turned back that morning. Ahead of you, a slot canyon of ancient granite waits, cold water rushing between walls that squeeze to shoulder-width in places. That rope is not bureaucratic theatre. Chilseon Valley (칠선계곡) is one of the three so-called 'three sacred valleys' of Jirisan — alongside Piagol and Hanshin — and for years its fragile ecosystem was being loved to death by unrestricted crowds.
