A Ridge Few Foreigners Ever Find Cheongwansan sits in Jangheung County, deep in the southwestern corner of South Jeolla Province, and it is exactly the kind of mountain that slips through every 'best hikes in Korea' list. At 806 metres it is not the tallest peak on the south coast, but on a clear winter or early-spring morning you can stand on the summit ridge and pick out Jeju Island floating on the horizon to the south — a view that stops most of my clients mid-sentence. The problem has never been the trail itself. The problem is getting there. Jangheung-eup is reachable by intercity bus from Gwangju or Suncheon, but the trailheads for Cheongwansan's best routes are scattered across rural valleys well outside town. There is no local bus that connects them with any useful timing, and taxis from Jangheung-eup are scarce enough that banking on one for your return journey is a genuine gamble.
